Our tips and advice for packing for a desert road trip

Our essentials for sun protection

If you've followed African trip's advice, you won't be exploring the Moroccan desert at the height of summer, when daytime temperatures flirt with 50 degrees. In autumn, winter and early spring, the days are mild and pleasant, but beware of the blazing sun.

Take your sunglasses

If there's one thing you should remember to take, it's a pair of sunglasses with excellent UV protection. Beware, the counterfeit pairs of sunglasses that you can buy just about everywhere in the medina are very trendy but won't protect your eyes at all from the sun's harmful rays. So take a good pair of sunglasses with you. For those who wear contact lenses, this will also protect them a little from dust and sand.

Cap and sun cream

We don't need to introduce you to them any more, you know them well! Choose an SPF 50+ cream and remember to reapply every two hours. And no, even sunscreen with SPF 50 protection - just in case - won't stop you tanning, it'll just stop your face burning in the sun.

The famous blue "Cheich

The chèche or tagelmust in Tuareg ⵜⴳⵍⵎⵙⵜ is a large scarf, generally 4 metres long, which will cover your head and protect your face from the sun and sand. Traditionally a beautiful royal blue - the colour that protects best from the sun - you'll find them in all colours in the souks we pass through before arriving in the desert.

Clothing and equipment for comfortable travel

When you set off on an adventure in the Moroccan desert, comfort is essential. Here are a few things you shouldn't forget in your suitcase:

Lightweight, breathable clothing

Choose clothes made from natural materials such as cotton or linen, which allow your skin to breathe. Lightweight, loose-fitting trousers will protect you from the sun while giving you plenty of freedom of movement.

Appropriate footwear

A good pair of hiking boots is essential for the sometimes difficult desert terrain. Choose sturdy shoes that are waterproof if possible, and make sure you wear them before you set off to avoid blisters.

Don't forget to take a more comfortable pair of closed shoes for those relaxing moments at the end of the day. Scorpions are rare in the desert, but you can never be too careful when it comes to this sort of thing 😊

Tips for optimising your suitcase

Limiting weight

Don't overload your suitcase - airlines are becoming increasingly strict about the weight and size of luggage. Take only the essentials, and remember to pack versatile clothes and leave room for any souvenirs you might want to take home.

Compartment bags

Use compression bags to organise your belongings. This will make it easier to find items and optimise the space in your suitcase.

Day backpack

A small rucksack can be useful for day trips, allowing you to carry water and snacks while keeping your hands free.

Conclusion: Get ready for adventure!

Packing for a road trip in the Moroccan desert requires careful preparation to ensure comfort and safety. By following this checklist, you'll be ready to explore the majestic dunes and discover the beauty of Morocco.
